About this service

A pharmacist can assess a number of common conditions and discuss the options with you. The assessment is a conversation: the pharmacist asks about your situation, checks whether the condition is one they are able to help with, and explains what happens next.

An assessment does not automatically lead to a prescription. If the pharmacist judges that another healthcare provider is better placed to help, they will tell you and explain why.

Who may benefit

  • People with a common, uncomplicated condition who would like to speak to a healthcare professional quickly
  • People who are unsure whether a condition needs to be seen by a physician
  • People who would like to understand the options available to them

What to expect

  1. 1A short conversationThe pharmacist asks about your situation and history in a private area.
  2. 2An assessmentThe pharmacist decides whether this is something they are able to assess.
  3. 3A clear next stepYou leave knowing what the pharmacist can do, or who else can help.

What to bring

  • A list of anything you currently take
  • Your provincial health card, if you have one

Good to know

  • An assessment is required — the pharmacist cannot advise without one

  • The pharmacist may recommend that you see another healthcare provider
  • Not every condition can be assessed in a pharmacy

Common questions

Do I need an appointment?

Please contact the pharmacy to check. Appointments are recommended so a pharmacist is free to speak with you privately.

Will I definitely get a prescription?

No. The pharmacist assesses each situation individually and may recommend another healthcare provider instead.
